Stock profit calculator

Gross profit is the easy number. This one takes fees out, shows the return on what you actually put at risk, and tells you the price the position needs just to get back to flat.

Fees are optional. Enter the round-trip total if you pay them. Nothing you type is sent anywhere; the maths runs in your browser.

How it works

Net profit is (sell minus buy) times shares, less fees. Return on cost divides that by what you paid for the position, which is the figure worth comparing between trades of different size.

Break-even sell is your buy price plus fees spread across the shares. Below it the trade loses money even if the stock closed above where you bought.

Return on cost is not the same as return on risk. If you had a stop, the money you actually had at stake was the distance to that stop, not the full position value, which is usually a much smaller number and a more useful denominator.

Common questions

Is return on cost the same as R?

No. R measures profit against what you risked, which is the distance from entry to stop, not the full position value. A 7% return on cost can be 2R or 0.3R depending on where the stop sat.

How do I handle a position I scaled out of?

Run each exit separately, or use the weighted average exit price across the fills. Averaging the exits by share count is correct; averaging the prices alone is not unless every exit was the same size.

Does this handle short positions?

Enter the sell price as the price you shorted at and the buy price as the cover, then read the sign. The arithmetic is the same, the order of the two legs is reversed.
